MOUNT HOBSON SLOPE.
PETITION FOR PRESERVATION". I The preservation, of th? beautiful we.-t- ' eru as.]>eet of Mount Hobson as an open : sp;ue has been made the subject of a petition to the Dihvorth Trust Board by a number of influential residents of j Kenmera. The petition is as follows:— ■ ■"(•entlemen, —We, the undersigned residents of Remuera, and citizens of Auckland, beg respectfully to urge upon your board the advisability of preserving intact the western slope of Mount Hobson. It is generally acknowledged to be a scene, of unique beauty and an ornament, not merely to Kemuera, but to the surrounding district. We admit that as trustees you are bound to de- i velop your estate profitably, but we j tliink that like individual owners of property, you should al=u have a reasonable regard to the interests of the j public. It appears to us that the com- i paratively small revenue which might be j derived from the leasing for building' puxpo-p- of the land in question would I be an inadequate recompense fjr the dis- | ti.'rurement ot a hill remarkable for its | (-harm, even in favoured Auckland. We would also point out that the earlier j ■tenants of your land ;<dioining took up i their lea.-es' in the b.-lief that the site i vonld be used for the Dihvorth Institute, and not for private residences. We trust, therefore, that you board will give j favourable consideration to ovtr request."'
Advice received by the Whakatane Chamber of (.'nnmieroe states that the ; lv.~tmaster's residence iidjoinin-j the | "Whakatane Post Office i- to be included ; in the post office, n n»-\v residence being erected for the postmaster.
