BULL-FIGHT ON THE WHARF
WATERSIDERS AS PICADORS. One of a party of seven bulls that were being taken off the Arabura at the Queen's wharf this morning asserted his independence, no doubt encouraged by the fine weather and attractive open epaoes of the wharf, and fairly took charge of the place for over an hour, The beast had been safely landed in a - float, when it incontinently knocked down the front of the vehicle and clam- ' bered out over the horse's back. It was I still tied up to the cart, but when it J slipped its halter and definitely chalj longed the bystanders there was something of a panic. A member of the whari staff, with sound strategy, had the big wharf gates shut, so that the battle was confined to the wharf. Then there was I some fine charging, counter-charging, and J brilliant side-steppinff as the bull fully j entered into the spirit of the business ! and warmed up to his task. Prodigious frats of valour by various watersiders and wharf officials were witnessed, the Union Company's time-keeper being conspicuous in a spectacular attempt to administer the coup-de-grace. Finally the animal was tricked into entering one of the wharf sheds, where it was shut in, but when it realised that it had been I treated unfairly magnificent execution I was done among the bags of grain stored in the building. After a quarter of an hour's demonstration of its prowess the bull gracefully admitted defeat aud submitted to capture.
