STABILISING INDUSTRY
GOVERNMENT'S POLICY. THE FALLING COAL OTJTyUT. COMBATING THE TROUBLE. (By CuWe.—Press Association.—Copyright.) LONDON, August 22. The Prime Minister, Mr. D. Lloyd f-eorge, prior to his departure for* a holiday in France, took the unusual course of issuing a full summary of his recent speech on the Government policy in regard to trade, industry, and labour, because "the issue had been obscured by the discussion of one or two highlv-coii-troversial points which, though important, bear only upon a small portion of the Government programme." Fresh proposals not previously mentioned are outlined by the Prime Minister, who ways: "H the committee of the National Industrial Conference fails to agree on -the unemployment question, the Government may make proposals in the name of the community." The Government is to immediately establish a committee to inquire into the diminution of the coal output. It is also taking steps to increase general efficiency by extending technical education for maii- | agers and workers, and by encouraging industrial research in inventions and st andards. A department of the Board of Trade will be estiiblished to encourage standardisation in British industry. A commission is now considering' minimum prices for afrriculural products for 1920, i but delay is probable. The Government therefore undertakes to continue the existing rates for twelve months. Legislation will be introduced in the autumn to combat the harmful effects of trusts and combinations.—(A. and N.Z. Cable.)
