CRUELTY TO ANIMALS.
(To the Editor.) Sir,—While walking through the Albert Park early la-<t Sunday morning 1 had my attention drawn to a dog that bad to all appearances been thrown into the water which .surrounds the base of the fountain, and being unable to get out was standing, shivering, half submerged in tihe cold water. How long it had been there I do not know, but, with the assistance of the superintendent of the park, we managed to rescue the animul from its rathe- cold position. This is the second time that 1 have seen this sort of thing happen. A short time I ago I had occasion to remonstrate with la boy who was swinging a cat round by i the hind legs, and seemed to think it .great fun in torturing the animal. If (these people could be caught I think a I good flogging would do them good. If 'it is necessary to get rid of an animal there is a more humane way than by illtreating it. I think that parents &hould assist the S.P.C.A. by encouraging and inculcating into the minds of their children a better love for dumb animals so that in the future these unfortunate creatures will always be treated with kindness. I have, always found that animals are not slow to show, their appreciation for any kindness extended to j them.—l am, etc., I CHARLES H. BOOTH.
