600 MEN OUT.
THROUGH RAILWAY CUT. LABOURERS DEMAND RELIEF WORKS. MEETING IN AUCKLAND. A largely-attended meeting of the General Labourers' Union last night passed a resolution instructing the organising secretary (Mr. A. O'Neill) to ask the Minister of Labour and the Minister of Public Works to start some scheme providing relief employment in or about Auckland to absorb the 600 odd employees who have been thrown out of work by the curtailment in the railway services. In the discussion of the resolution members pointed out that several sawmills had closed down, many railway servants had been put off and were seeking other employment, and fully 200 members of the Labourers' Union itself were out of work because builders and other employers wanted materials. The off season for freezing works had also increased the surplus in the labour market, while a few men had come from the wharves, where work has been slack lately.
