DEFENCE DEPARTMENTS METHODS. CRITICISM BY HOSPITAL BOABD. The manner in which the Defence -authorities proceeded to evacuate ttie Epsom Convalescent Home was criticised I by members of the Auckland Hospital " and Charitable Aid Board last niiiht. 3lr. Rowe introduced the subject by stating that he understood that the Home was going , to 'be closed up. The chairman, Mr. "Wallace, said that the Defence Department had gone about it in their usual military style. They had ignored the Board in the matter, the first intimation being received at the Home. When he heard of this he went out immediately, and informed those in charge not to accept any instructions from anyone but the 1-fSdical Superintendent. The Board had not so far received anything in writing conveying the decision of the Department. Dr.Ma-guire (Medical Superintendent): I have got it in writing. The chairman: The Board have heen treated by the Department in such a ■Bray in the past that they did not look for anything other than "what they had received in the matter. ~Slx. Rowe: The Board were under the impression that the Home was going to eerve the purpose of a convalescent frome for all time. However, if the Department ivant to get out, let them get out. The chairman: What T object to is toe i-avalier fashion in ft-hieh they act. and (To Dr. Keller) the money that purchased the furniture -was raised by •the St. John Ambulance Association. The discussion then dropped.
