SOLDIERS' MOTHERS' LEAGUE
A GOOD YEAR, The annual meeting of the Soldiers Mothers' League was held in the Chamber of Commerce this afternoon. There was a large attendance, and Mts. Connor, president, took the chair. The summary of the year's work of the league shows fine results, and proves that tho organisation has justified its existence. The report states that since the current year began i)G7 applications had been placed on the books; many pensions had been increased because of the activities of the league; so the aim of the organisation to assist the distress of soldiers' mothers and put them on a better financial footing is being achieved. During the year the membership had been increased by four hundred and fifty. The work of the league has been very great, and it has considerably increased of late, while the exposure of terrible conditions such as those to which the tubercular soldiers had been subjected shows the necessity of the league's vigilance. The organisation has paid attention to returned soldiers, with especial regard to medical examinations and re-boarding. The league has also been successful in keeping the rents that many mothers had to pay as low as possible, and the financial footing of the league made a retrogressive movement on account of the influenza last October and November. Now, however, the finances are. sound. The balance-sheet shows receipts £ 12S IS/, expenditure £ 117 17/9, leaving a credit of £11 0/5. Officers were elected as follow:—Mrs Connor, president; Mrs. Cox, vice-pre-sident: Mrs. Ellis, hon. treasurer; and Mrs. Nicol, lion, secretary; and Mesdames Over, Graham, and Tucker, executive.
