In connection with the triple alliance Fallot the Lancashire miners' conference recommended the men to vote agr__ist direct action, but urged the Miners' Federation to convene a conference to support a l-i.2 per cent increase in piece rates. The Coal Controllor finally refused tinYorkshire miners' demands. Ther. are indications that the strikers' funds will _c exhausted in the next fortnight. It is stated in responsible circles that the collapse of the police strike and the complete failure of unauthorised action l_y the railwaymen has greatly strengthened the hands of the constitutional side of the Labour movement.—(A. and __Z. Cable.) V THE SEVEN HOURS' DAY. ; LONDON, August S (delayed). The Coal Controller and Sir R. S. Some (Minister of Labour) conferred ■with representatives of the South Yorkshire coal owners and the general secretary of the Yorkshire Miners" Federation. The Miners' Federation states that the conference resulted in a deadlock. The Coal Mines Bill, establishing a _even hours* working day. passed the .third reading in the House of Commons. Mr Lloyd George stated in the House of Commons that he hoped to make a Statement before the recess of the Government 's policy in regard to the report presented by Mr Justice Sankev"s Commission upon nationalisation of the coal lames.—( A and N.Z.
