A building to which clings a good deal of historic interest came under the hammer this morning, when Mr. T. Mandeno Jackson offered for sale the property known as Waikato House, near the top of Shortland Street. The bidding did not, however, reach the reserve, and tha property was withdrawn from sale. This building is of historic interest. In the early days it was a newspaper office, afterwards an hotel, and from the balcony Sir George Grey once addressed a dense crowd that had assembled to receive hjnl back from Wellington after a big fight in Parliament in the interests of the North as against the South. Sir George was escorted all the way from Onehunga by gentlemen on horseback, and the firebells rang as the city was reached. After entering the hotel amidst great cheering, Sir George appeared on the balcony and delivered a brief address of thanks for the warm welcome accorded him by the people of Auckland. In later years the building has been used as a boardinghouse. A word of warning Is tendered to those who are apt to be forgetful. The week at issue of the "Observer" has reached its limit, and to those who have been following the exploits of pirate yon Luckner it is essential that they secure a copy of this week's issue to-day.
