RAILWAY CONSTRUCTION URGED. A PROGRESSIVE POLICY WANTED. THE LEAGUE'S IDEAS. The Auckland Railway League has de- f Icided that it is time the' Government < |should be pressed to formulate a pro- | igressive policy of railway construction, ] and in this matter the chairman of the ' [League (Mr. P. E. Cheal), who has lately i ireturncd from a tour of the King Coun- } (try, Hawke's Bay, and Taranaki, has put \ a scheme before that body. ; He 6aid yesterday that for many years i *the North has suffered in comparison < (with the South in this matter of railway ( (works, simply because the South was \ better organised. All sorts of local bodies ) had supported movements for construe- ) tion in the South, so that when deputations went up to AVellington, or went (before Ministers anywhere, it was quickly ; realised that there was a great weight of (public opinion behind the requests. But (in the North the deputations could not the Ministers there was an inIsistent and widespread demand for what (they asked. The chairman suggested that j I all Chambers of Commerce and other I'local bodies be circularised with the idea of ascertaining what financial assistance | ithe League could get to build up a fair] 'fund for systematic agitation in the interests of better and more progressive i railway construction for Auckland,! Hawke's Bay, and Taranaki provinces. I This, of course, was just the outline of! the scheme, and the League as a body! considers that the time is ripe for such j a campaign. Mr. J. S. Ambury moved, and Mr. Graves Aickin seconded, that the chairman should get into touch with other bodies to promote the scheme.
