IRISH POLICY.
NEED FOR A DECLARATION. OPERATION OF HOME RULE. LONDON, July 16. The Lord Chancellor (Lord Birkenhead), addressing the House of Lords, admitted the necessity for declaring an Irish policy at an early date. The Government had agreed that something must be done because the existing Home Rule Act would automatically operate six sonths after the war. He believed that not a dozen Irish constituencies now wanted it in its present form. The Government recognised that it must soon discuss the problem and reach a decision, but had already stated it would not sacrifice those friendly to the British io confessed enemies. Neither Ulster nor the' Sinn Fein leaders would accept Dominion Home Rule shorn of control over the army and navy. Personally, he could say there was little hope oi a happy issue until law and order were restored.—(A. and N.Z. Cable.) AMERICAN SENATE'S MOTION. (Received 11.30 a.m.) LONDON, July 16. Mr Bonar Law, in the House of Commons, said that the Government did not regard the action of the United States Senate in reference to Ireland as a contravention of Article 10 of the Peace Covenants.—(A. and NJZ.
