BETTING WITH BOYS.

A easo of considerable interest to the iett-ng fraternity was heard at WaverJey. when charges of betting with two Jads. aged IS and 1-3 years respectively, were preferred against a man named w' Blyde. One of the lads. Edward James JloKenna. aged IS years, stated that, ■arith a younger companion, he had betted with the defendant 10 or 15 times during the past six months. The bets werp made to half crowns durins the last Hawera races. Tho boy had haff a. crown on a horse called Prince Formby with the defendant, and won seven or eight shillings. His companion, Eric iNaraett. gave similar evidence. The defendant denied that he betted with the boys, and declared that lie was not a bookmaker. His Worship said he believed the boys. End not the defendant. It was a notorious thing that bookmakers looked upon fines as a license fee, and went on with their calling. The iines consequents aad to be very substantial. The defendant was lined £50 on the first charge, the second one beini withdrawn.
