NO-LICENSE CONVENTION.

i " i AUCKLAND DELEGATES MEET. I The Annua! Convention of the Auck- ' land Province Xo-L'icense Council was ' opened at the Trades Hall, Hobson I ' Wtreet, this morning, there being'a large' j attendance of delegates. ' The president, Rev. P. Smallfleld, in! 1 reviewing the referendum, expressed the ' opinion that many people had voted for j continuance, or abstained from voting, \ not because they were opposed to pro- ; hibition, but because they thought com- ' pensation wrong. It was known that' v many of the soldiers felt that if four ? and a-half millions went to the trade ! there would be insufficient money for repatriation purposes. N"ow that compensation had been turned down that," question would not be reopened. I s The annual report stated that thß' ? volume of work accomplished in Mew Zealand during the past twelve months • constituted a record in the temperance cause, but recognising the evils of the ' traffic and our responsibility to the victims, their hearts were heavy when they realised that another year had been I F secured for the continuance of "the re-l sultant misery and degradation." .Returning soldiers would be enlightened to I the fact that the Prohibition party had! not attempted to secure a catch vote j during their absence, as had been stated. The Xew Zealand Alliance had done all | c possible to ensure that the man mc khaki would not be deprived of his vote. I r Special tribute was paid to the work ot | c Messrs. Simpson. Bayly. Bell, and For-It tune, from Canada, Prof. Xicholls, from'c C.S.A., and all other speakers and.t organisers in the last campaign. During i the 'year several valued workers had! been lost, among the most prominent' being the late Mrs. Mason, Rev. C. H. , Garland, and Mr. \V. J. Speight, all otwhom had rendered signal service to the cause. The Xational Efficiency League! was putting its strength into the next; campaign, and would operate jointly' with the Alliance. | The report and balance-sheet were' adopted. The following officers were elected for * the ensuing year:—President, Rev. P. ' Smallfleld; vice-presidents, Dr. F. Keller, ' Messrs. H. E. Pacey and L. E. Falkner * (vacancies), Rev. W. J. Elliott, Messrs.! C. G. Hill, C. T. Harris and J. Fleming 1 (sitting members): secretary, Mr. E. ! Poison; treasurer. Mr. J. L. Scott;! auditors, Messrs. J. J. Parker and E. A. Perkins. i j i
