The King's Birthday. Great Xorthern Steeplechase run at Ellerslie to-day. The Prince of Wales will visit Japan after his tour of Canada in August. The railwaymen's 44-h_>ur week will come into operation next Monday. The New Zealand Returned Soldiers* Association Conference ended yesterday. It is expected that General Russell will accede to n_—lerous requests and enter political life. The Dominion's Customs revenue for May was £437,888, the largest amount ever collected in any one month. The people of New Zealand have raised £2,113,887 for war work oversea, and of this sum £351,955 remains in hand. An indent agent at Invercargill lately solicited orders for German fancy goods awaiting shipment. He did not find, any customers. About 7000 trained New Zealand rall-t waymen went to the war, this number representing almost 40 per cent, of the trained staff. The Amir has sent the Viceroy of India a letter asking for peace, and declaring that he never intended to sever friendship with Britain. The Canterbury Land Board is asking for a larger staff to cope with increased work arising from returned soldiers' applications for land. Amongst the birthday honours are a large number of New Zealand awards of the OJJ.E. in both the military and civil divisions of the Order. Bola Aldred, a farmer, who did not appear, was fined "£SO at Hamilton yesterday for impersonating another voter at the recent licensing poIL Hon. T. M. Wilford told a deputation of Rotorua residents yesterday that personally he was in favour of granting the freehold, subject to certain safeguards. A dead body of a man found on the beach south of Cape Foulwind is supposed to be that of , William James Hickey, lost in the Buller River five weeks ago. The' London police strike has been postponed .because the men hope to. secure the assistance of the Labour Triple Allijanee. The strike, if it comes, will be of the lightning variety. The Winnipeg strike has spread until it includes every phase of industrial life. The more radical elements declare that they will establish a Soviet government and take control of property. Public servants and railway officers are to receive a universal war bonus of £45 per annum. A new scale of salaries and increments for the clerical division of the Public Service has been gazetted.
