A SLIGHT ON THE MAYOR.
iTo the Editor.) Sir, —It seems to mo tliat tlic position taken up by 1 lie president of the Fiirincrs' fnion yesterday morning and reported by you with regard to the alleged "slight by the Mayor" should l>? reversed and read "Slight on the Mayor. - ' In the first place, a social gathering was arranged, and then these gentlemen were . invited to attend. The Mayor, who, as 'everyone knows or should know, is the busiest man in the province, accepts the invitation provisionally that he is able to attend, and I gather from the newspaper report that at a meeting of tlie City Council, called for seven o'clock, the tramway purchase was discussed, in which over a million is involved, and -the city electric lighting, involving over £SO,OOO. The business of this meeting took till after 0..°>0, after which the Mayor was called away to another important meeting. Then the president, without communicating his intention, slated the invited guests instead of awaiting some explanation. This was received with acclamation, one dissentient (myself) exclaiming "Hound thorn down!" It appeared to mc at the time, to say the least, most uncalled for and discourteous for the president to condemn gentlemen occupying such positions, placed there by the "citizens of Auckland, in their absence.—l am, etc., May 31. J. ALLEX.
