An Interesting football match, under Rugby Union rules, took place at Trentham on Saturday, the 23rd inst., between Senior Cadets representing the North and South Islands. These cadets were selected from those attending courses of Instruction. at Trentham Camp, and gave a good exhibition of fast, open Rugby. North Island quickly gained the initiative, forcing the play Into the Southern 25. By a tricky run Phillips (King's College, Auckland) ran over and converted. Shortly afterwards the same player, by similar good work, again scored, the try not being converted. At half time the score was:— North 8, South 0. In the opening stages of the second spell the 'Southern forwards, by a well-combined rush, forced the ball over; Allen (Otago High School) followed it and scored. The try was not converted. A passing rush b> the South Island gave Dickson (Christchurch High School) the ball, and after a splendid and Tlsky run be scored in the corner. North 8, Sonth 6. The play after this score was almost entirely in favour of the Northerners, their back play being much superior to that of the South team, whose three-quarters rarely handled the ball. After good passing rushes by their backs. I.ortu added two more unconverted tries to their credit. Jaggs (wing three-quarter) and Lintott (wing-forward) were the scorers, both doing tricky work. The game ended: —North Island 14, South Island 6. In the Northern team, Phillips, Buckland, Lintott and Jaggs were always prominent, while of the Southerners Dickson, Allen and Taylor did good work. Lieut. Bennett, of Auckland Grammar School, acted as a capable referee. MAORIS V. SOUTHLAND. (By Telegraph.—Press Association.) INVEUCARGILL, Wednesday.
