DEVONPORT COUNCIL.
RATES FOR THE TEAR. SPECIAL LOAN PROPOSAL. The Devonport Borough Council met Inst evening the Mayor, Mr. H. S. W. King, prcsidiSs. The following recommendations from the Legal and Finance Committee regarding tlir rates to be struck for the ensuing year were approved. The general rate levy t o bo Increased from 2Jd in the S. on the basis of unimproved value to -Jjd in the £. Combined special rates totalling 21-82(1 In the £ on the basis of unimproved value. A lighting rate of Jd In the £ on the basis of unimproved value. Hospitable and charitable aid rate be Increased from 1-Gd In the £ on the basis of the capital value to Jd in the £. The uniform annual fee for refuse and sanitation account be Increased from 7/6 to 10/. In regard to the reqnest of the North. Devonport Ratepayers and Residents' Association for the formation of a vehicular track In Queen Street, the Public Works and Services Committee made the following /recommendation: —The street In question having been duly Inspected, the Association be Informed that the Council la prepared to take the necessary steps to raise a special loan for reading purposes in the Victoria Park area, eubject to the area being created a special area, and made solely responsible for all loan Interest charges and sinking fund. In general discussion it was pointed out that a heavy burden was being placed on the Association, and that thn road as proposed would cost between £600 and £800. As there was ai possibility of another route, the scheme was referred to the committee for further consideration. The Public Works and Services Committee recommended that the balance of the loan money available for the purchase of water meters be expended. To complete the metering of the borough 2.j5 additional meters are required, the present cost being over £5 each, the money in hand totalling approximately £700. The Legal and Finance Committee are to consider the allocation of the funds. A report of the conference with the directors of the Ferry Company regarding the question of Increased Tares was given by Councillor Woodall, and a vote of thanks -was given him for the comprehensive manner in which he had dealt with his mission The Mayor was also thanked for his report on the town-planning conference, which he attended ac the Council's delegate The Hospital and Charitable Aid Board rate for the coming year was notifled to be in the £ on the basis of the capital The estimated expenditure on several accounts totalled £7GBB 13/4. •"««" "c
