STRIKES IN CANADA.
THE WINNIPEG TROUBLE. RIOTING IN THE CITY. GOVERNMENT EMPLOYEES' DEMANDS. I Received 1.10 p.m.) OTTAWA, May 15. Industry in Winnipeg is at a standstill owing to a general strike in sympathy with the metal trades for union recognition. Some weeks ago these trades asked for higher wages and shorter hours and union recognition. The companies refused, but agreed to arbitration. The unions refused arbitration on the principle of collective bargaining., The companies thereupon agreed to the demands for higher wagea and shorter j hours, but refused to deal with any unions outside their own employees. To-day the climax was reached. Street car employees, telephone, postal, elevator atatl's, thousands of clerks, stenographers, general workers and firemen came out. Stereotypy's and pressmen joined the strike, and the newspapers j suspended publication. But the Strike : Committee ordered them to resume duty | to assist in preserving order. Sufficient I bakers were also retained to supply i l)read for the hospitals, while a citizens' committee manned the fire stations. Host i of the shops were closed, and were not ' opened until they received permission I from the strike leaders, who claim that j twenty-six thousand struck on the Kith. Bread and milk depots were opened to relieve distress. A big force of police has been drafted in. Some rioting occurred this morning, ' and a few were injuredThe Manitoba Government employees are demanding a fifty per cent advance ] in wanes by May 2t>.
