TAKAPUNA TRAMWAYS.
APPEAL TO COUNCXL. PUBLIC MEETING TO BE HELD. The irregularities of the Takapuna boat and tram services came before the Takapuna Borough Council at ite meeting last evening, when a petition was received which had been drawn up and signed by about eighty residents, who had been held up on one of the steamers during a breakdown. A letter from the Takapuna Tramway Company, also received" at the meeting, asked the Council to make an appointment for a conference on the question of the trani fares. About a dozen ratepayers attended the meeting. The Mayor, Mr W. Blomfield, said that the matter was a. very serious one indeed. He suggested that a very strong deputation from the Council should wait on the company in conjunction with a deputation which intended to ask for an alteration in the present state of affairs. It would naturally be asked how the company could suggest increasing the fares when the services were in such a state a≤ to seriously menace the welfare or the Borough. At the present rate, the Council's valuations miglit be effected, and then the matter of repaying loans would crop up. He •moved that the Company be asked to meet the whole Council. Councillor Bise urged that the Council should first discuss the matter itself. It would be no use waiting on the Company if each councillor had different views. (They should be a united body on the question. Councillor Arthur said that he would like to see the matter openly discussed in the presence of the ratepayers. It was finally decided to hold an adjourned meeting of the Council on June 0, at which the public would be invited to be present. A public meeting will be called later.
