PUPUKE IN TROUBLE.
SERVICE DISORGANISED. PASSENGERS MAROONED. Tho residents of Takapuna and Bayswater seem particularly unfortunate in regard to their tram and boat service, the former being by no means a perfectrunning system. Last evening 'further misfortune came the company's way in a j mishap to its ferry steamer Pupuke, which necessitated the services of the Devonport Company's Eagle being requi-1 sitioned until the Pupuke's machinery had been satisfactorily adjusted. It was on her 5.30 run from Bays-water 1 to Auckland, just when the chilly effect* of the wintry evening wes*? manifesting j themselves that trouble was discovered I in the Pupuke's engines. She was then about 400 yards from the Bayswater | wharf, and had a complement of about | forty passengers. The engines were not running smoothly, and examination revealed a defect in the circulation pump. It was found necessary to bring the vessel to anchor off the Stanley Point beacon. In the meantime the vessel's distress had been discerned from the Bayswater office, and Mr. J. Kerr got into commit* nication with the Devonport Ferry Com-. panv, and the Eagle was requisitioned to take the G. 15 trip from Auckland to . Bayswater, a delay of twenty minutes in the time-table taking place. Eventually the Pupuke was able to resume her interrupted voyage, and landed her passengers at Auckland about 7.30 p.m. The service was slightly disorganised for the remainder of the evening, and owing to «the late arrival of the last tram from ™Milford the Pupuke did an extra trip to Auckland to accommodate the. only through passenger on the car. This morning the 7 and 8 o'clock ser- i vices were slighly put out owing to a defect in the draw-bar connecting, the two cars. Many of the intending pas-j sengers at Belmont, despairing of the late arrival of the tram, walked through to Devonport, and came to the city via I that route.
