RAND GOLD MINES.
NUMBER MAY CLOSE DOWN. CAPETOWN, May 20. Sir E. Walters (president of the • Johannesburg Mines), in a letter to the Premier, warns him of the critical position in tlio gold mining industry. Nothing could now prevent a number ot important mines closing shortly. He urges Government consideration of the position, in view of the unemployment and distress that must result. Tin , Minister of Mines, interviewed, said the Government realised the gravity of the position, and was anxious to assist, but tin . Government could not undertakr to keep the mines working at a loss. It was considering the appointment of a commission to inquire into the whole position, with special consideration of the problem of the relation of native coloured labour to the mines. The Cape Copper Company's mine in Xamaqualand has closed, rendering idle :500 Europeans and 3000 natives.— (A. and X.Z. Cable.)
