SOLDIERS' GRATUITIES.
MINISTER COUNSELS PATIENCE. The Hon Sir James Allen has written as follows to the Soldiers' Mothers' League, : Auckland: "Please allay the discontent I amongst the soldier.-, if there is any. j at our delay in fixing up the gratuities. W'c have, at any rate, a provisional I (scheme, and if that is acceptable, the ! gratuities could be paid shortly, but I want to reconsider it, and this needs -time. Things done in a hurry are often not done well. It will probably be better for the soldier if he is patient, and your leneme can do much -to make him patient. ! Canada has fixed up her schemes, hut ] Australia has not. We are certainly ! further alicaU of Australia at .the preI sent moment. I have this day received I advice from Canada regarding her i scheme, and will give the matter further I consideration as early as possible. I am sorry that your committee was disappointed with my letter of the 16th inst. ■Perhaps I shali hear from you further, about it, as the matter is coming forward again.''
