SOCIAL AFTERNOON.
TO SOLDIERS' DEPKXDENTS. There was a large attendance yesterday at the social afternoon given by the Soldiers Dependents' Committee of the Women's Patriotic League to the wives and mothers of the men on service. This wag the first entertainment of the kind given since the signing of the armistice. Mrs. J. H. Gunson presided and extended a cordial welcome to those present, particularly to the English war brides who had accepted the invitation to attend. Mrs. Gunson said this was the first time the committee had met in the time of peace instead of war. She expressed the hope that the afternoons would be continued throughout the winter till all the men had returned from the front. All present then united in a demonstration of welcome to the English wives. An address was delivered by Adjutant Gordon. An enjoyable musical programme was given, including songs by Miss Wright, and recitations by Mrs. Kiss'in and Miss H. Hicks. A number of humorous items were contributed by the Rev. Jasper Calder. Miss Xewcombe acted as pianist and contributed several solos. At the conclusion, afternoon tea was served by members of the committee.
