DEMAND FOR ECONOMY.
REVISION OF ESTIMATES. LONDON, March 20. Urgent demands for economy in national finance were advanced during a debate in the House of Commons. slr George Lambert said it was probable the country would be faced with an appalling Budget of £1,500,000,000. Sir F. Bambury said a continuation of the present rate of expenditure would result in national bankruptcy. The unemployment donation amounted to a premium on idleness. The increase in the issue of currency notes, now amounting to £321,000.000 a-'ainst a gold reserve of £20,000,000, was a serious feature of the situation.
Sir Donald MaeLean urged a revision of the Army, Navy, and Air estimates before June.
Mr Austen Chamberlain (Chancellor of the Exchequer) agreed on a re-exami-nation of the estimates in the light of the peace terms. Our yearly expenditure for the future, he said, would be greater than the total pre-war debt. It could only be met by increased production, increased efficiency, and greater exports.— (A. and N.Z. Cable.)
