Most of the horses that raced at Ashburton last week were restricted to easy tasks, while others that are not wanted for a few weeks were not seriously tried out.

Gloaming was responsible for the gallop of the morning. He got to the end of six furlongs in 1.14 1-5, moving with great freedom all the way, and finishing well.

Afterglow and Hosslui covered live furlongs in 1.3 :S-r>, Afterglow holding his companion at the finish.

Curo and Indus were given three-quarter pace work, Miss Mimle rattled over halt a mile in 40 4-ss, and Koyal Stag ran five furlongs in 1.0 3-3, Nlghtralder assisting over the last four.

I'unk am! Day Lad occupied I.IGJ. over six furlongs. They finished together, with Punka going Hllghtly the better of the pair.

Fllbisco was going comfortably at the end of a mile, which was run Iα 1.50, but Sir Fanciful, which weut with him, was being hunted along over the last piece ot the journey.

Tortrlx bent Flight Commander over five furlongs, accomplished in 1.4 1-3. They went very fast lc the early purl, but were stopping at the Uni'-h. Abtlnial, the two-yi-ur-old by Klavus— May Colours, accompanied them for two furlongs, and theu dropped out.

Tyue. with the assistance of a Bonibardo mare over the last live, got to the end of six furlongs in 1.18 3-o, and could have done a lot better.

Some Kid and Recorder finished together, well clear of Immec:s, after sprinting five furlongs in 1.4 1-5. Recorder's effort was very satisfactory, as she gave the other pair a start of soreral lengths.

Heathercote dashed over live furlongs in 1.2 t-5. while Acquittal and Steepliolm sprinted half a mile, keeping close company all the way.

Bon Spec, looking none the worse for his race at Ashburton, was restricted to trotting In the middle.

W. llibberd bus made another start ■β-ith Varnish's half-brother. Hands Off, by Antagonist—Prudish. Provided he remains sound he should pay his way, as he showed some pace as a youngster.

Fiery Cross and Killjoy will be shipped to the North Island to-night, on the way to their owner's station. It is unlikely that Fiery Cross will be further perse .-ered with, while Killjoy has definitely finished racing. The latter will take up stud duties next season, Snrto being her most likely mate.

W. McDonald will leave for the North to-morrow night lv charge of Mr G. L. Stead's trio, Kilmoon, Almoner and Sundance. Thpy will race at the Hnwke's Bay Jockey Club's meeting next week, after which they will go on to Ellerslle for the Auckland Racing Club's Easter fixture.

A. McAulay expects to leave Riccnrton next week for his new home at Tauherenlkau, where he will have charge of Mr 11. W. Brown's team.

The Bonlform mare Bonslgn, trained for some time by her owner at Lecston. has been placed under the enre of J. MeCombe at Ricearton. Though not in the same class as her brilliant young brother, Bon Spec, anoUicr inmate of McCombe's stables. Bonsign fs a useful galloper, and should easily pay her way. She has raced very unluckily in her recent engagements, having finished second three times within the past month.

R. Longlpy has recommlssloned Koeslan, which has been enjoying n spell for a few weeks. The rest appears to have done the horse good, and It is hoped that he will get through a preparation without further Interruption.

The two-year-old Some Kid, by Birkenhpnd—Sea Queen, will in future be trained by W. McDonald, his former trainer. A MoAulay, being about to settle in the North Island, where he will have charge of Mr H. W. Brown's team.

After running second to Gay Lad in the Longbeaeh Hack Handicap at Ashburton on Friday, the three-year-old Cerberus, by Menschlkoft—Malevolence, was sold by Mr H. A. Boyle to Mr H. Ensor, in whose colours the gelding raced on Saturday. On his way home from the Ashburton meeting, Mr Boyle purchased from Mr. Godfrey Hall the two-year-old half-sister to Cerberus. which is by Achilles, will be broken in, and will then be sent to Riecarton to be trained by R. Longley.

Mr. H. W. Brown did not have to -wait long ior a return of the money spent In purchasing Daytime, as he got most of it back on Saturday, when the Hyniettus gelding won the Autumn Handicap at Ashburton. The manner in which the race was run .suited him, and he gave n greatly improved performance compared with his effort in the Ashburton Cup the previous day, when he ran himself out in the effort to bridge the gap which Almoner and Indus opened out soon after the start.
