Mr. O. 11. Nelson, of Apia, Samoa, is staying at Cargen. Major R. M. Smythe, of Wellington, is staying at Cargen. Mr. V. J. Blake, of Gisborne, has been appointed chief draughtsman. Surgeon-General S. Skernian is staying at Cargen, accompanied by his wife. Mr. T. M. Lawler, Clerk of the Court at Hastings, is about to retire after 39 years' service. The Mayor of Dunedin, Mr. J. J. Clark, has decided not to stand for reelection.—Press Association.

■ Major J. W. Brunt has been appointed commandant of the prisoners of war internment camp in succession to Major Mlatheson.

J Mr. P. Hally, member of the Board of Trade, and Mr. J. W. Collins, secretary, were passengers for Wellington by last night's express. Mr. H. R. Robinnon, cashier at the Auckland Lands Board Office, has been appointed chief clerk to the newlyformed Xorth Auckland Land Board. Mr. J. Blair Mason, C.E., has been asked by the Wanganui Harbour Board to inspect and report on matters connected with the development scheme of that place.

Mr. John Rowe has declined nomination as a candidate for the office of Mayor of Onehunga. He informed a deputation that waited upon him that business reasons pi evented his acceding to their request. Major Frank Holmes, E.M., son of Mr. James Holmes, Timaru, has been informed by the Admiralty of his appointment as a Cavalier of the Crown of Italy. Major Holmes belonged to the Royal Naval Division, and served at Antwerp, Gallipoli, and afterwards in Franco. Mr. Hairy W. Hawke, son of Mr. and Mrs. Woodman Hawke, of Waimate, has died at Samari Island, New Guinea. He went to tho front early in the war, served in Egypt, and was 'invalided home. Two years ago he was appointed to a position on a plantation at New Guinea
