RAILWAYS DEMANDS.
PROSPECTS MORE HOPEFUL
MILITANT MASS MEETINGS. INSIST ON FULL DEMANDS. (Received 0.45 a.m.) LONDON. March 24. A mass meeting of railwaymen in London and Liverpool demanded insistence on the full demands. Mr. J. H. Thomas, organising secretary, addressed the London meeting, urging patience and conciliation. He met with a mixed reception, nevertheless the Government, the companies, and the men's leaders are striving to attain a solution, the prospects of which are considered more promising. Mr. Thomas states that the railwaymen's demands have been conceded in principle. The greatest difference is not between the Government and the railwaymen, but between the unions concerned. National strikes in other trades are less threatening, though five thousand miners in the Rhondda Valley declined their leaders' advice, and struck for the Federation's full demands. A number of Nottingham factories are stopping for lack of coal.--1 A. and NX Cable.)
