MOUNT ROSKILLS LACK OF SANITATION.

(To the Editor.) Sir, —According to tiie Press report of the last meeting of the Mount Roskill Road Board, on the motion of Mr. Tunsley (the chairman), another poll of tbe ratepayers is to be taken on the paving of Manukatt Road question. The paving of thus arterial road Cay be necessary, but how much more neccsriary is the institution of an adequate' sanitary service throughout the district and the makintr ami repairing roads to allow the unfortunate and long-suffering ratepayers reasonable access to their properties. It is difficult to understand tbe attitude of the Board in its anxiety to spend money which can ill be ..pared on Manukatt Road when residents, through the gross indifference of the Board, are compelled to dispose of nightsoil in their own allotments, a disgusting state of affairs, which the law should not tolerate in a suburb so adjacent to a city the size of Auckland.

Dust is admittedly a serious menace to health, but one which can be minimised by the use of modern water-carts, which are conspicuous by their absence on Manukau Road, but the introduction of a decent and hygienic sanitary t>ystem is a hundredfold more vital to the health of the whole community.

Was his Worship the Mayor of Auckland aware of the disgusting conditions existing in Mount Roskill when he received a deputation from the Board suggesting another poll be taken on tiie Manukau Road question? I think not, or maybe he would have conveyed to that deputation the old adage, "Physician Heal Thyself."

Let the Mount Roskill Road Board first put its own house in order, and make it clean ere it enters into an unwarranted expenditure. considering other pressing needs as mentioned above, and which may benefit a few at the expense of many.—l am, etr., SAXTTAS.
