ISLAND WRECK.
THE CUTTER JANET. A TOTAL LOSS. ELEVEN LIVES LOST. Messrs. Tynda.ll and Roes have received information by mail from the Islands confirming the reported loss of their cutter Janet, with all hands. The Janet, a vessel of 25 tons, -well known in Auckland shipping circles, left ! Vavau for Keppel on December 2Sth, ar-1 rived at Keppel on January Ist, discharged provisions, and took in part cargo nf enpra. She sailed from Keppels on the return voyage to Vavau on Janu- j ary 5. As she got overdue the owners; dispatched a search , vessel, which re-1 turned in three days with the news that , the vessel had evidently been lost with | nil hands. Wreckage from the Janet, consisting of her keel, mast, etc., were found washed ashore at Haapai, and us ttie wea-; ther was not had during the period she j was missing it is concluded that she struck on one of the windward reefs off j Vavau and went to pieces. | Tin- Janet was in charge of Captain j Mann, r >f Vavau. a master with long ex- j perienee in small sailing vessels employed in the Island trade. The cutter had also a crow nf four natives and the following j passengers: — ; Mr. Harris (a resident of Vavau) and I one child. Mr. (Jallachor (a resident of Keppels) j and ono child. Mr. Johnston (a resident of Vavau). j One native passenger. Messrs. Tyndall and Ross had no insurance on either th? vessel or cargo.
