HIGH TRAVELLING RATES.
fTo tbe Editor.' Sir, —Referring to the statement made by the Minister of Shipping to the effect that the high rate of passenger fares has nothing to do with the Government, but is an extra charge made by the shipping companies, this statement does not agree in any way with the reason given by the agents for the said companies, as, without exception, they all say that the tax of £40 on first and second bookings, and £10 on third, is an Imperial tax. ln the face of these conflicting statements 1 think that as a matter of public interest the shipping companies should either accept or deny the responsibility, as no doubt intending passengers might feel a patriotic glow in paying the extra charge if made by the Imperial Government, which aforesaid glow would be quite lacking if made solely in the interest of the shipping companies.—l am, etc., S.P.J.
