ST. JOHN'S, TAMAKI.

XEW COLLEGE TO BE ERECTED. Another old landmark has to give way before the march of progress. St. John's College, Tiimaki, lias a quaint, old-time appearance, like all buildings put up under the direction of the lirst Bishop of the Anglican Church in New Zealand (Dr. G. A. Selwyn), but it has been found necessary, in order to meet tho present altered conditions, to erect A modern up-to-date educational structure. This is only one of the many instances where the "dead hand of the past" cannot be allowed to hamper the present. 1 fc has been decided by the trustees of St. .John's College to remove the present buildings, which arc entirely unsuited to modern requirements, and replace them with a handsome (structure which will cost many thousands pounds. 'Jin: scheme has been carefully thought out by the trustees and the architect, in order to, provide adequate accommodation for the larg-.-r number of students wiio will lie attending this college in the future. One reason for the new building being on a larger scale is that in future the students from Te Ran Institute, llawke's liav. are to be located at Tamaki.

St. John's College has been closed during the war, as the Warden (Canon Williams) and the whole of the students went to the front. These are now gradually returning home with the. different drafts, and it is hoped the new college will be built ready for opening about the beginning of next year. It has been decided, in the erection of the new building to utilise all tho material from the present college, and accommodation will ba provided for about double the former number of students. In connection with building operations to be undertaken tho Patteson wing, which contains the valuable library presented to the college by the late Dr. Kinder, is to be completed.
