THE HOME OF THE SKYSCRAPER

The two photographs provide a striking example of the changes which the past 7 4 years have seen in New York. The two views were secured in Wall Street, the great financial centre of the American capital, in 1845 and 1919 respectively. In 1845 Wall Street had already become the financial centre of the city, but on the southern side of the street dwelling houses still held their sway. The spire of Trinity Church then dominated the street. To-day the old church still stands, the one remaining feature of the original architecture, as will be seen from the photograph, but is no longer a land mark, on account of the towering skyscrapers which have sprung up around it.
