The Southland Cup. w-hlr-h carries a stake of COOhovs, only attracted a nomination of a dozen, and by no stretch of imagination could they be called a firstclass lot.

The .Marton Jockey Club have decided to call for tenders for 40 loose boxes to be erected on their course, and these will be used principally for visiting horses competing at the club's fixtures.

A back seen out in the Maiden Plate at Tf Aroha on Mondsv that showed some pace was IMottle Rose. a tlve-year-old gelding by Curl Rosa—'Mottle. Mottle Rose might not reach first class, but should soon be equal to winning a hack race.

The withdrawal of Flnmark from the VjR.C St. Leger would give the opinion that the son of Finland has failed to stand up to his work. It was reported some time ago that Mr. Lowry's «ist off was showing signs of soreness, and it has evidently developed. As the race looked at the mercy of the ex-New Zealand colt. Mr, Wade, who paid the long price of HOOOgns. for him, must be accounted decidedly unlucky.

The Auckland owner-trainer A. Brown was represented at the recent Timaru meeting by Shanghai. Evidently the allegations made in West ! Australia In regard to the doping of horses ; has some foundation, for the W.A.T C. i I Perth) recently passed the following regui lation : "All horses intended to be ran In any race shall be brought Into the saddling pad<tock at least one hour Immediately preceding the time appointed for the starting of such nwe, and shall remain thpre until the time shall have arrived to proceed to the starting post." I The victory of Lucknow in the Canlfleld ' Futurity Stakes gave the English owners. Messrs. Robinson and Clark, their third success in the event. Lucknow is an excentlonally well bred horse, being by Minora from Amphora, which is the dam of Sundridge. Lucknow would have all the allowance In the race, which would reduce his weight to 7st. and the-«e allowances give English-bred horses n big advantage. j for the horse must win a race in AustrnlI asla before he is entitled to a penalty. On the other hand the penalties are pretty severe, and 'usually crush a good horse out of the race. I The death of Gluterino as a result of falling In the 'hurdle race on the oponlne : day of the Te Aroha meeting is real bad ! luck for W. H. Windsor, for the son of ] Gluten was a decidedly useful sort, and : with the jumping season just started I should have picked up a decent stake. The gelding was In a *a<l way after his fall. hut it was not considered that tils injuries were likely to prove fatal, and he was put on the train to lie brought back to AuckI land. However, the train did not get very fur on the way before death resulted. The horse was evidently hurt internally. It Is only some six or seven months ago ! that Windsor lost a good horse in Oluepot I which met with injuries in Australia while I being schooled, and to lose Gluterino as well is a severe financial loss. A few moments of excitement were exj perienced in InvercarsHl trottins training circles on Friday morning (writes "Sir !Modred"i. and the chnnces of an accident looked ugly. .but. happily, the danger wis averted at the expense of n few thrills among those concerned. .Mr. K>tt was driving .laponlca fast on the clay track to the home tnrn. when two horsempu ahead of him failed to realise that he was nomine and give way to him. as they were only jogging. Eventually, a chorus of snouts warned the parties in. front what was in the wind, and they scattered as the b!a<-k mare reached them. The bustle of the occasion disturbed two other horses working on the plough circuit in the vicinity and hi the twinkling of an eye there was a sulky without a reinsman, a" rearinc har ness horse, and an antmnl that liad been In the lead gallopmg wildly out over the landscape. Meanwhile her owner cleverly and luckily steered Japonk-a out of the melee, and the Wlldwood Jun. mare completed her task without a break or mishap ! It was a near thing, however, and the on- ■ lookers breathed more freely when the (Just .. f!>'—1 ;'■■■--• --' 't was seen that no

Mr. A. J. Toxward's Imported fillies Bonny Briar aDd Star Lady are both engaged in the A.R.C. Easter Handicap. Mr. G. L. Stead evidently intends being represented at the AjR-C. Autumn meeting, for he has engaged Kilmoon, Almoner, and Collector in various events at the fixture. Gaziqw, which was reported a short time. ftgo to be badly amiss, must have made a good recovery, for he has been nominated for the A.X.C. Raster Handicap. There is every probability of British Arch being brought freni Sydney to compete at the A.R.C. Autumn meeting. The son of 'Marble Arch appears among the nominations for the Brighton Hurdles. Evidently the idea of converting Cynic Into a Jumper has not been abandoned for the Imported horse has been accorded a nomination in the Brighton Hurdles, to be run at the A.It.C. Autumn meeting. It is a long time sin-e such a high-class lot has bee/n nominated for the AiK-kland Racing Clubs Easter Handicap, for with a few exceptions all the best handicap horses In New Zealand are engaged. Only six horses engaged in thp A.U.C Kaster Handicap arc trained at No less thai; 'J'2 are cwned and trained in the South. A surprise ■nomination in the Autumn Steeplechase is that of Loyal Arch, which It wis thought would be kopt at hurdling for some time yet. before being asked to Lake on the toig fences. The fact that Gloaming dnes not appear among tuose engaged in the Great Northern iSt. Leger will have a big bearing on that event, and judaing by the number of three-year-olds engaged at the meeting the fields should he much larger than usual. With Desert Hold in the A'R.C. Easter Handicap. Mr McMsmemin will not have any trouble in finding a top weight, but it will be interesting to se? how he assesses her with Sasanof. King Lupin, and rarislan Diamond over a mile. With a dozen tliree-yenr-olds engaged in the A.R.C. Raster Handicap, that division Is exceptionally strong this year, and it would not occasion any surprise if the It was generally expected that Hemlra would be nominated for th<- A.R.C Kaster Handicap, but Mrs. IVrry has only Demagogue engaged. THE THRACE INCIDENT Following are the findings of the Judicial I Committee of the Hamilton Racing Club • <re the disqualification at its recent meet- ■ ing:— I ! Afternoon finding: After heaving the ex-! planations of S. Henderson, rider, and K. i Alison, owner of Thrace, relative to that ! i horses display in the respective hurdle , ! ra'-es of Saturday and Monday, we are ! lof opinion that the tactics of Henderson i w<>re of a doubtful nature, and that he I failed to rido his mount out on the first : day, and caution him accordingly. "With ; regard to Mr. Alison's explana'ion, the stewards arp of the oprnion that, the ln- ■ structions given to Henderson on the first ! dny were of a negative nature, and that , although the distance of the race on the ■ second day inig-bt probably be in favour of : Thrace's chance, the discrepancy was much ton great. Although neither explanation ; was altogether satisfactory, the evidence ! was not sufficient to justify the stewards in taking further action regarding the runi ning of Thrace." i Evening finding: "That under Section II of Iti.'e I. pnrt 8:!.
