POLICE COURT.
(Before Mr. J. E. Wilson, 3.M.) HER FIRST OFFENCE. Hilda Dyer (22) admitted that on she stole a blouse and 33/ in cash. Detective-Sergt. Hammond stated that the girl was a friend of two young women who were waitresses in an hotel, and she went to the hotel at a time when the waitresses were busy, And stole the blouse and money from the bedroom of her friends. She was the daughter of respectable people, and had never previously been in any trouble.. Accused was convicted and admitted to probation for twelve months. HIS TRIP POSTPONED; Albert David Prosser (37) was charged that on Tuesday, at Ellerslie, he caused actual bodily harm to Albert Claude Hyde ,under circumstances which, in the event of Hyde's death from the injuries received, would have rendered accused liable to a charge of manslaughter. In asking for a remand till Friday, Senior-Sergt. McNamara stated that Trosser had got a permit to leave for Sydney prior to Tuesday. On that date ho was alleged to have ridden on , a motor-cycle into a squad of senior cadets, and knocked down one, whose leg was broken. When accused was arrested last night he was aboard the Niagara bound for Sydney, with a bankdraft for between £200 and £300. on him. 1 The remand was granted, bail being fixed at a cash deposit of £200. It was mentioned that the case was not likely to be heard for six weeks, as the injured J lad would probably not be. in. a condiI tion to give evidence before that time. DIDN'.T LIKE CRUSADERS. -Michael Fisher (41) admitted-that in the railway entrance yesterday afteri noon lie assaulted. Henry Summers,, and used threatening behaviour.. He had gone up to a soldier who had the red cross I on, his arm, called the. man a shirker, I ajid struck him. In the fall following I the blow Summers' wristlet watch was broken. Fisher, went further down the street and was flourishing an. open pocket-knife when he was arrested. He was a returned soldier, and., was described as being half-mad with drink at the. time. Fisher, was fined.: £5, in default a month's imprisonment; 20/ of. the fine to go .to-Summers for the repair, of his watch. TO STAY WITH HIS BROTHER. Steve Ujugiim, a young Dalmatian, was charged that he failed to report; for national,, service ■at the Maungaturoto public .works.. It-was stated, that defendant was brother of the Joseph Gjugum, who had ; been sentenced. to three months' imprisonment yesterday for. a,similar offence, and had been employed, with his Brother at ■ Waimauku, and had made the same demur- abujit obeying the order to report.for national service. Kvidpnce was given, that.Steve made the same .evasions ac his brother, and declared, that they were not going to go to naiional work until after they had had a holiday. Defendant was sentenced to three months' imprisonment. ON THE STARVATION LINE. Four girls and a boy, of age 3 ranging from ten years tc one year, were charged with being children having no means of subsistence. Evidence was given that the father had bought five acres of land in the suburbs two years ago at £130 an acre, but had ; npt .paid a penny on the purchase, and had recently had to go to hospital, leaving the-wife and children with only what money they could get from the sale of a.few onions to live on. Thej\ had /been : just barely able, to' sub- ' sist, on- what, they could, get from this source, and the, land had been, surrendered. , Inquiries had resulted in en. aunt of the children being found, who .was willing, to take the two youngest-children, ' and was a suitable person. The,, other three children' were committed to -the Auckland industrial School and the charge against the two youngest was withdrawn. SUBJECT TO LAPSES. A boy of twelve, from- ffewton, who had had previous experience of tlie Court as the result of mischievous outbreaks, admitted,; that> on. Wednesday,-he went I into a ,house, at Eden, Terrace, and stole j a.watch and chain ; and a.mouey-oqx-con-taining, nearly £12. He had-hidden the j watch and chain, and the . mpney J oox J under the houee at-home, and all bat I 10/' of the money had ben recovered. 1 It was reported that the boy, did well when under strict control, but that his home control .was lax. The case.against the boy- was adjourned for a week to enable enquiries ;to,:be.-made..by the "Probation Officer for a likely, fos.ter.-liome w.here the control would be sufficiently firm. ALLOWED TO .GET WILFUL. A boy of fourteen years, who had for several years been under various changes of control owing to changes in residence Jof the family, admitted stealing 50/ ; from one house in Kingsland, and a i number of trinkets from another last ■ week.. It was stated that the .ad, after having been allowed a good deal of lati- ■ tujle .and money for a considerable time, had-been taken to task by his father for some peccadillo, and instead of being . repentant he got piqued anr] ran away ! from home. When he became hungr-y he j committed the thefts to, get food. After j having heard the statements of the • i general circumstances, his Wors/bip adi I monished the lad, and adjourned the j case for twelve months, with «. caution . that failure on the boyV part to behave . himself-would result in his being dealt , J with on the present charge.
