Makura, He had been a fireman on the Mokoia, and had missed his ship at Vanoouwr, and he embarked on the Makura as _ third-class passenger. He was given a job as fireman, and acted as firem-i'i steward. He now had about f7 in wages due him. His Worship: Has he his home her?* The senior-sergeant said the man hid not his home in Auckland, and he might be taken back on the ship. One of the ship's officers stated thkt the man was shipped at Vancouver at, deport. His Worship: You can't deport ties? people here. Why was he deported? The officer stated that the mineral deported because he had missed his a.bjp in Vancouver, and the ship didn't want to retain him. . f Accused was remanded till Tuesday io enable fuller inquiries to be made about his deportation from Canada. A STUBBORN JUGOSLAV. Joseph Gjugum (30), a Jugoslav, wut charged that he failed to comply, with - notice to report at the Maungaturoto drainage works for national service. ( Mr Gray, for defendant, entered a pl«a of not guilty, stating that his client said that he was working for Mr. Mitchelson, and because he could not get a rise itwages he went to Mr. Cullen. office $6 see about taking national service W-61 he was arested. Mr. Selwyn Mays said defendant's statement was about on a par with tn« usual Jugoslav excuse. Eviedence woulbe called to show that on i'-bruary * defendant and liis brother were served with notices to report for national' service, and that they threw the notices down and said they were not going to work for the Government, but were going to have a good time in town. When arrested, defendant said that he could not do the national work on account ol' a venereal trouble. He had been working for Mr. Mitchelson doing ordinary farm work at Waimauku for' 11/ /a day, and having also a free cottage and free milk. He said he wasn't going to work for the Government for 11/ a _* T and keep himself. As a matter of f»C*t when Mr. Mitchelson became aware that defendant and his brother would not work for the Government he dismissed them. At this stage .Mr. Gray said he learned that he had not been fully instructed by his client, and withdrew the plea of not guilty. His Worship stated that defendant, j and such of his countrymen who were ia* ! clined to defy the authorities, had to he j made to understand that they could ,-°* jdo just as they liked.
