CHESS.
A quiet week at the Auckland Chess Club, with small attendances on both | Monday and Thursday evenings, though j the lunch-hour session seems as popular |as ever. Only one tourney game was played during the week, when S. Coyne conceded pawn and two moves to C. Hall. In the middle game llr. Coyne had rather the best position, but Mr. Hall pulled himself together and brought off a victory in good style. The game between Stuart and Grierson did not come off on the time-table, date, these two players having arranged to postpone the contest. •Some of the competitors in the final round of tlie Red Cross ->urney seem to have lost interest in the event," but even if they huve no chance of gaining first or second honours, it is hoped they will show the true sporting spirit, and endeavour to finish their games before the end of tlie month, when this tourney definitely closes. Perhaps the fact that there is a third prize has been forgotten by some of the players. Word has arrived that the Mnsterton Chess Club is busy preparing for their "chess rally," which is to take place at Easter. There is every prospect of a successful gathering, entries having been received from Wanganui, Wairarapa, Wellington, Wellington .South, and the Wellington Working Men's Club. Among the competitors will be quite a number of X.Z. Congress players. The programme, which is posted on tlie noticeboard at the Auckland Chess Club, is of an attractive nature; but so far no Auckland player has expressed a determination to make the trip.
