REMUERA NEEDS.
MEETING OF RATEPAYERS. CITY COUNCIL CRITICISED. A meeting of ratepayers was held at Remuera last evening for the purpose of discussing among other things the condition of the Remuera streets, which was severely criticised. Mr. C. J. Parr, M.P., pointed out that when the union of Remuera was effected one of the clauses in the agreement provided that within a year from the end of the war the Council would take a poll of the ratepayers of the city on a proposal to raise a loan large enough to place the streets of Remuera in good order. The estimate of the cost of this was about ii 100.000. It was decided to remind the City Council of this obligation, those present considering that the proposal to lay down tlie Remuera .toad in concrete was not sufficient. A discussion also took place on the proposed railway embankment across Hobson Day, apprehension being expressed that the area of 150 acres of tidal land that will lie between the embankment and the foreshore would be devoted to commercial purposes, thus destroying the value of the Remuera beach front and seriously prejudicing the district as a residential suburb. A deputation was appointed to wait on the Railway Department and the Auckland Harbour Board with a view to ascertaining their intentions in regard to the matter, the meeting favouring a suggestion made by Mr. H. \V. Hudson that an effort should be made to have the area used as i. boat harbour. The need for public baths at Remuera was also referred to, and it was pointed out that while baths had been established at Ponsonby and Parnell none had been provided for Remuera. It was decided to urge the City Council to acquire from the Harbour Board a site fur the baths at Orakei. and to endeavour to have the baths ready for use by next summer. Mention was made of the future of the portion of the Dilworth Trust property known as the Remuera hockey ground. It was stated that the frontages to the land had recently been cut up for building purposes, and it was decided to ask the City Council to fuTii! its promise made to a deputation that it would intervene in the event of any steps being taken to subdivide the land. After a brief discussion regarding the dust nuisance and the cessation of street watering, it was decided to ask the City Council in the interest of public health to at least water the streets in the vicinity of shops. It was decided by those present to form themselves into a ratepayers' association with tbe object of protecting the rights of Remuera district, particularly in regard to the fulfilment of the conditions of the agreement under which the Remuera district was merged into the city. Officers were elected as follows: — ; Chairman. Mr. T. N. Baxter: executive j committee. Messrs. V. Spencer, H. W. Hudson. C. J. Parr. M.P.. E. Pitcaithley. A. Cook. (. A. Whitney. R. A. Wyatt. H. R. Maxwell: secretary and treasurer. Mr. H. A. Horrocks.
