GERMAN PRISONERS.

LUXURIES AT MOTOTHI. STATEMENT BY MINISTER. WELLINGTON, Friday. The Minister for Defence stated to-day that the report which had been published that German prisoners of war at Motuihi had been supplied with whisky, eggs, and fresh fruit, other than by order of the medical officer, was absolutely contrary to fact. Only five prisoners of. war in the Dominion were entitled to purchase spirits, wines and ale. In accordance with the instructions of the Army Council, those officers had been permitted to purchase such refreshments in strictly limited quantities. The scale of rations for prisoners of war was slightly under that for the New Zealand Expeditionary Force. Officer prisoners and others possessing private means were permitted to purchase whatever food they desired to supplement the ration. This privilege was conferred by instructions issued by the Army Council.
