TOTAL OF 40,000. MELBOURNE, February "2S. In reply to in<(uiries from the Federal Government, the Commonwealth trade representative in America, Mr. H. Y. Braddon, has cabled that from the end of August to date there have been 400,000 deaths from influenza in the United States. The disease has greatly decreased, but is not entirely eradicated. The cause and mode of spreading are unknown. Masking has been adopted, but its efficiency has not been proved.—(A. and N.Z. Cable.)
