TRENTHAM CANTEEN.

GOrERNMENT TO TAKE IT OVER. (By Telegraph—Special to " Star.") WELLINGTON, this day. It is probable that the Trentham camp canteen, which has up to the present been a private contract, will be taken over by the Defence Department on the expiry of the contract at the end of October. The question of buildings, etc., is now being investigated with a view to this course. Ever since the establishment of the camp in 1914 the canteen I has been under private management. The revenue derived from the sale of privileges hae been paid to the various unite pro rata for their recreation and other funds. In the course of four years many thousands of pounds have 'been allocated in this way. On November 15, IHI7, the Government assumed the management of the canteens at the Featherston and Tauhsrenikau camps. It was then stated that it tile experiment proved successful Trentham would be similarly treated. At Keatherston the management w;u* placed in tlie hands of a .--iiecial canteen committee, thp president being Captain Andrew Kairbairn. The prices of most linos wore ri-ditred by as much a.-; i 3 per rent, yet it was found that a fairly stib-t-tanli;il profit remained for the " regimental fundi.
