AMUSEMENTS.

THE NATIONAL THEATRE. One of the big attraction- of the week is **A Modem Musketeer," where the comedy tnan, Douglas Fairbanks,*takcs part. It is the headliner nt the National Thentre, and is having a very successful season. Tbe big athletic laughter-raiser takes the part of a modern hero who lias the spirit of one of the chivalrous gentlemen of old. He has to struggle against the desires of two scoundrels, and his adventures all through the piece make for humour nnd for drama ! of the best aud most scintillating sort. "A Modern Musketeer" is hacked by the scenes of Ireland taken by Burton Holmes, and' the American and Australian Gazettes, also by splendid music. THE TIVOLI PICTURES. Sessue Hayakawn. subtile actor for Paramount, Is chief player at Ihe Tivoli this week. He stars in a beautiful, generouslypresented picture that comes from the Lasky studios, and is called "Hidden Pearls." The story ls a rather interesting one. dealing with the romance of an island prince, nnd what comes of it. The actiou is set before very pretty scenery. Another feature of the programme is the Burton Holmes Scottish travelogue, which Is supported by Scottish music. THE OPERA HOUSE. Still the large audiences attend Fuller's Opera Honse. where this week the vaudeville bPI ls one of infinite variety. There is a very effective scene iv which Bryant and Brr_nt. a mau and a girl, juggle with all. sorts of things before a blaze of pretty patterns pointed out with variouslycoloured lights. The Farrows have a clever comedy sketch, the Vivians sing tunefully, and hosts of other performers present patter song, choruses and dance.

KATHLENE MACDONELL. Judging by the extensive advance booking when the plans for the .1. C. Williamson Kathlene MacDonell first six nights were opened at Wlldman and Arey's this morning, the season presages a highly successful issue. "Komanee" will be played for the first five nights, and will he followed for two nights by -'The Cinderella Man." The season has been extended to eleven nights, during w_ien will be presented •Romance," "The Cinderella Man." "The Riiinbow Outcast," and "Daddy I_>ng Legs." The first performance of •Ttomauce" will be given at H.M. Theatre on Friday next. THE SCARLET TttOUBADOURS. The Scarlet Troubadours, like other similar companies organised under the Edward Branscombe management, are particularly strong on the vocal side, and their repertoire contains many excellent concerted operatic scenas. This side of their programme is very popular Indeed. Bearing in mind the demand of present-day audiences for comedy, the Troubadonrs have also bnltt up a big series of burlesques on current attractions, a feature which gives ample scope to the comedians of the cmnjiany. The .Scarlet Troubadours will commence n season at the Town Hall concert chamber on Saturday evening next. The box plan for the first six nights opens at Wlldman and Arey's to-morrow morning at 8 o'clock. THE BRITANNIA. In five acts, the problem play "Maternity** is drawing the people to the Britannia. This is a powerful theme, backed By "Her Boy" and by the first episode of that fast and fascinating serial "The Neglected Wife." OTHER PICTURE ENTERTAINMENTS. At the Arcadia Theatre now Charlotte Walker plays as heroine in the drama "Kindling." Emily Stevens has pride of place at the Princess, in tbe clever Metro play "A Sleeping Memory." It is a story of a woman's past through about three different existences. *'Hls Own People" is drawing considerable crowds to the Queen's, where Its fns--in-tlng action is presented by Morev and Gladys Leslie. Alice Brady, World actress, baa the leading part in "The Trap," a play from life which beads the bill at Everybody's.

The best picture on tbe bill at the Globe ls called "Moral Courage." It features Muriel Ostricbc and Arthur Ashley. Gome fine spectacles, and au action that Sb _lT_»y_ __rt and excitt .*, are the main features of "Womanhood,"* starring Alice Joyce at the Grand. A circus tale ls "The Sewdust Ring." It ls by Triangle and features Bessie Love. It Is In season at the Empress. A very good programme of pictures ls In currency nt the West F'nd. The big feature is "The Stainless Barrier," a Triangle play.
