OBITUARY.

MP*. JAMES R. WALTERS. One of the oldest residents of Au-k----land district (Mr. James R. Walters) (died yesterday at his residence, KingsI land, "aged 75 years. He was born in I Cornwall, England, in 18-43, and when five years of age was brought by his mother to Auckland in tbe ship Elora in 1848. The father (Mr. John Walters) and his eldest son (Mr. William I Walters) had come to Auckland three I years previously. On leaving school Mr. Jj. R. Walters started farming at Kings- ' land, and at times assisted his father, who took contracts for road-making. The 1 Walters family had a stone quarry on their property at Kingsland, and from this atone waa procured for the sewer in Queen Street in tbe early days, also for I the Union Bank and many other buildI ings in the city. Mr. J. R. Walters followed dairying for about thirty years, and in 1897 sold out, retiring from business, but taking an active interest in j public affairs. He succeeded bis father as a member of tbe old Mount Eden Road I Board, and was for seven consecutive years chairman of that local body. Upon his final retirement he was presented by the ratepayers with an illuminated address and a purse of sovereigns. Mr. , Walters was for many years a member of the Mount Roskill School Committee, land was presented with an address upon | retiring. During the Maori war in 1861 !he served with the militia, and then joined the cavalry under Captain Hardington, remaining with that force for nine years. When the various troops were amalgamated in tbe Nixon Light Horse, under Captain Isaacs, Mr.

Walters was sergeant-major. Deceased waa an enthusiastic member of tbe Awcklnnd A. and P. Association, and was president on more than one occasion, pc also served on the Auckland Hospital and Charitable Aid Board, the Anslican Orphans' Home Trust Board, and was also a Justice of tbe Peace. He a.lso belonged to the Masonic Fraternity belongine- to Lodere Manukau. Tn 1870 he married a dattehter of Mr. William Pnobert. who survives her husband. There are three sons and six dausrhters. The fnneral leaves his residence, Onslow Road, at 2 p.m. to-morrow.
