NATIONAL PLAYGROUND.
TONGARIRO PARK SUGGESTED.
A public meeting is to be held about a fortnight hence for the purpose of j forming a committee, to urge upon the Government the necessity for developing Tongariro National Park as a health resort. The meeting is .being called by the Mayor in view of the great amount ' of interest shown in the suggestion. i The temporary warden of the park, Mr. John Cullen, 1.5.0., said that he con- ! sidered that the most pressing need in j furtherance of the suggestion was the establishment of a boarding-house at Waimarino, where all visitors to the western side of the park arrive and depart. The hermitage, which it was suggested should be built on the foothills of Ruapehu, 15 miles from Waimarino, would be used solely by mountaineering parties, who represented loss than 5 per cent of the visitors to Waimarino, and would certainly be a waste of money. A road branching off from the prison road, about five miles from Waimarino, could be constructed to give easy access to Ruapehu. If the road were made suitable for motor traffic, visitors wishing to explore the mountain could easily motor out in half an hour. ,
