OBITUARY.

CAPTAIN JOHN GIBB. - A former commodore of the Union Company's fleet, Captain John Gibb, died on Sunday in, Sydney after a short illness. He was a native of Fifeshire, and came to New Zealand in the barquentine May in his early days. Later he became master of that vessel, and was in the tea trade, running to and from China. Afterwards he entered the service of the Westport Cpal Company, and joined the; staff of the Union Company when it purchased the Westport .boats. Captain Gibb retired from the service of the Union Company five years ago. He brought the Niagara from England In 1913. and ran her lirst trip round from Sydney to Vancouver. Deceased was unmarried and 70 years of age. MR. ARTHUR TILLY. A resident of Auckland for 55 years, Mr. Arthur Tilly, died last evening, aged 09 years. Mr. Tilly arrived in Auckland J in the ship Queen of Beauty in 1803.. Mr. Tilly will be remembered by many ; citizens as an attendant at the Muni-1 cipal Free Library and Art Gallery for 29 years. In his earlier days he was j proprietor of the City Cigar Divan, which war. well known in athletic circles, as it was there the lirst Rugby Football Association was formed, and the meetings were held for a considerable time. Mr. Tilly is survived by his widow, one son (Mr. Arthur Tilly), and three daughters (Mrs. H. Hansen, of Timaru, Mrs" H. Hulme, of Hokianga, and Nurse Barbara Tilly, who is at present on leave "from the hospital ship Mararoa. The interment takes place to-morrow, at Symonds Street Cemetery.

MRS. ALEXANDER MeDONALD. i A resident of Wellington for the long | period of 77 years, Mrs. Charlotte McDonald has just died in that city. She arrived in Wellington with her parents . when two years of age, in the ship Arab, i in IS4I. Later she was married to Mr. I Alexander McDonald, and is survived by two sons and five daughters- Three of the latter arc Sisters of Mercy. MR. WILLIAM WATSON. Mr. William Watson, son of the late ' Mr. Thomas Watson, of Kirkintilloch, Scotland, passed away at Rawlingstone Private Hospital on July 31, after a short illness, at the early age of 31 years. The late Mr. Watson was well known in Masonic circles, being a Past Master of Lodge St. Andrew, 41S, S.C. | He was also' a member of Lodge Nil Dcs- j perandum, No. 6405, A-O.F. Members ; of these and other lodges followed his j remains to Waikaraka Cemetery, where I he was laid at rest. The Rev. Mr. Murray, of St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church, conducted the burial service. MRS. ALEXANDER McGIBBON. A very old resident, of Arch Dill dis- { trict, Mrs. Lillias Marshall McGibbon, died on Sunday at the advanced age of S3 years, in her residence, "Langrigg," Panama Stroet. Deceased was born in

Scotland, and was married to the late Alexander McGibbon, who forty years ago was one of the best-known commercial travellers in the city. For about 'half a century Mrs. McGibbon has resided at Arch Hill. She was, until failing health interfered with her activities, a regular attendant at St. James' Presbyterian Church.

MR. B. W. D. COOKE. Another of our old identities passed away at Onerahi on Saturday in the person of Mr. B. W. D. Cooke, at the age of SI. The deceased gentleman was of independent means, and was born in Calcutta. He arrived at Port Lyttelton 60 years ago, and took up sheep-farming on Quail Island, also acting as port signalman at the signal station there. He also owned the quarries on a neighbouring island, and supplied the stone for the Lyttelton harbour works. Subsequently he farmed at the Kaipara, coming to Onerahi 20 years ago, for the J last II of which he had resided with Mr. and Mrs. Caitecheon. He leaves a brother, Mr. C. E. C. Cooke, C.E., of Auckland. His remains were interred on Monday in the Onerahi "cemetery, Mr. M. P. Handforth performing the service.

I MR. THOMAS KEW HARTY. I Mr. Thomas Kew Harty, who for many years was a prominent and muchrespected citizen of Dunedin, died in Wellington on Thursday, in his Gsth year. The late Mr. Harty was born in London, and educated in County Cork, Ireland, arriving in New Zealand in 1874. In ISSS Mr. Harty, who was a Fellow of the Incorporated Institute of Accountants of New Zealand, founded the business of Hart}* and Co., merchants and importers, in Dunedin, and carried it on successfully j for many years. For upwards of ten years he had been in failing health. He was married in 1879, his wife, who was a daughter of Captain Walsh, of the Im- ■ perial Army, pre-deceasing him by some years, and he. is survived by two sons "(Dr. Garnet Harty, of Wellington, and Sergeant T. D. Harty, now on active service, who left with the Twelfth Rein forcements), and a daughter (Miss Harty, of Waitoa). His only brother i« Mr. J. Kew Harty, district manager at Auckland for the National Mutual Life Association.

(By Telegraph.—Press Association.) j STRATFORD, Monday. Frederick George Harbley, manager of the National Bank here, died yesterday, aged 84, after a sudden heart seizure. Deceased was well known throughout the j Dominion. '
