ENEMY FLANKS TURNED BETWEEN SOISSONS AND RHEIMS.

AMERICANS TAKE FISMES BY DIRECT ASSAULT. NEW YORK, August 5. The Germans have retired on a front of ten miles at Montdidier. Both enemy flanks have been turned between Soissons and Rheims. A communique from General Pershing states that the Americans captured Fismes by assault, and hold the south bank of the Ve3le in that section.—(A. and N.Z. Cable.) LONDON, August 5. Renter's correspondent at French headquarters states:— pause in the fettle along the Vesle is largely due to fatigue of the troops, who have been fighting and advancing continuously for several days, and also to soaking rains and consequent heavy roads. Only light advanced columns at present are in contact with the enemy along the Vesle. These are awaiting the main body of infantry and guns before attempting to drive the Germans behind the Vesle. The fact that the enemy has installed heavy artillery on the plateau behind the Vesle indicates the likelihood of his decision to attempt to stabilise bis line on the Vesle. The Germans are still close to Rheims, west, north, and east of the town.(Reuter.) NEW ZEALAND MOUNTEDS AND CYCLISTS IN THE BATTLE. HEADQUARTERS, August 3. The officers and men of the New Zealand Cyclists' Corps have been fighting faUantly in the Marne battle. They were largely instrumental in the capture sf one village. Some of the Otago Mounted Rifles did valuable scout work in ik? same "battle.—_.N-Z. .War Correspondent.^
