AMERICAN TRIBUTES
TO BRITAIN'S WAR WORK. (Received 9.45 a-m.) NEW YORK, August 5. The churches throughout the country held special services commemorating and lauding the British Empire's achievements in the war. A notable service, held m Trinity Church, in New York, was attended by representatives of the British Government. Dr. William T. Manning, in the course of his sermon, sent a message to King George, the British Government, and the people of the Empire, saying: "We pay a tribute of honour without reserve to Britain's part in the four years of war. We thankGod our men now fight beside you."— (A. and N.Z. Cable.) PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE. (Received 11.3© a-m.) LONDON, August 5. The Press Bureau reports that President Wilsoir sent this message to His Majesty the King:"America cordially extends a hand to Great Britain on the anniversary of Britain's entry into the war, and rejoices that the two' nations stand side by side for the great cause." King George replied:—"Your message was read with cordial appreciation by my people, encouraging them to the prosecution of the struggle against our common enemies. I am proud that my forces, and those of the United States, are fighting side by side. You may rest assured of our unswerving determination to continue with all our strength until final victory of right orer wrong is achieved." King George sent messages to the rulers of Brazil, Prance, Greece, Italy, Japan, Portugal, and Serbia, emphasising the Empire's unchanging resolve to concentrate its entire energy to secure a victorious conclusion of the struggle, and expressing confidence that a victorious peace is not far distant. > His Majesty sent a similar message to the King of the Belgians, and the Belgians, in which His Majesty said:— " Trials so bravely borne by a people so enduring provide an incentive to others to persevere till complete victory is achieved." King George also sent messages to the Kings of Siam and Montenegro, and the Presidents of China, Cuba, and Liberia.— (A and N.Z. and Renter.)
