GOODS FROM CANADA.
NEW SHIPPING REGULATION. IMPORT LICENSE BEFORE SPACE GRANTED. |, Mr. W. A. Beddoc, Canadian Trade \ ■': Commissioner, has received a cable from . ' ;• the Canadian War Trade Board that an '' import license must bo given by the Board before meat, dairy produce, and fruit will be given space on steamers ' i regularly on the Canadian run. Accord- • ing to an agreement between the New 'Zealand and Canadian Governments the Commissioner has explained, the War Trade Board controls the Bpace on " • j these subsidised steamers. In the future, therefore, the method of procedure will be for the Canadian agent of New Zealand shippers to get the import permit from the Board, then the Commissioner will be advised by his Government and he can then allocate the space. But the Commissioner made it clear that the granting of the license would carry no guarantee that the space would be allotted. A probable reason for the new regulation was to control the shipment of essentials, as some shippers had been sending goods to Canada then re-shipping it elsewhere. This had shut out more essential things. The license would give preference on the Vancouver boats. The classification of essential goods to v. have preference according to agreement between the two Governments had been prepared. The first essentials were placed as wool, hides, tallow, and pelts. Quite recently rabbit skins and kauri gum had been included among the secondary essentials. The Commissioner said that during this year 11,250 boxes of gum had been placed on the Vancouver steamers, and these shipments had been divided between twelve merchants, the Government being one. But the Government, he said, was by no means the largest shipper.
