MAORI MEETING.
NGATIWHATUA TRIBE EXEMPT. ADDRESS BY MR TAU HENARE, M.P. An important gathering of the Ngatiwhatua tribe was held at Reweti, in the Kaipara district, on Saturday to discuss Maori matters, and particularly in relation to recruiting. About 200 natives from that Maori Council district were present, including Mr. Tau Henare, M.P., who spoke at some length on conscription' pointing out that the tribe was bo well represented in the Army that it was excluded from conscription. Over 600 of its young men had enlisted, and the record of the Ngatiwhatua tribe was so worthy of its traditions that the Government had decided that it had done its share as regards man-power so worthily I that conscription would not be applied in this district. The remarks of the speaker were received with acclamation. The Rev. Te Paa, King Ruarangi, and Tapihama Paikea replied on behalf of the tribe, and were indebted to Mr. Tau Henare for his visit and the information he brought. UPPER HOUSE APPOINTMENT. A matter of interest which was also discussed was a pending appointment of a Maori representative of the North Auckland district to the Upper House. Mr. Tau Henare, M.P., is leaving Auckland this evening to interview the Maoris of the Bay of Islands.
