AMERICANS' GRIM FIGHT AT CHATEAU THIERRY
BANKS OF MARNE LINED WITH GERMAN DEAD. (Received 9.35 a.m.) NEW YORK, July 21. The New York '"Times" correspondent on the American front describes how the Americans fought the Germans at Chateau Thierry. Xevcr before wae such artillery preparation made. The Germans not only deluged the i front lines, but threw thousands of shells ten to thirty miles behind our lines. The Germans kept up a terrific barrage fire, whieli was so perfect that the curtain of fire and steel moved backwards and forwards across our sector ! hour by hour. Simultaneously the Germans brought up :!00 canvas boats in which 15.000 men crossed the Marne. Thc-n the barrage lifted, and the Germans advanced bravely against our rifle and machine-jrun fire. Meanwhile we perforated the bouts and then counter-attacked, and drove the Germans backward until they readied the river. Several swam to safety, but other? surrendered. Apart from more than 1000 prisoners, we killed or wounded nhout wix thousand Germans. The banks of the river wore literally lined -with German dead. Our losses were small compared with the Germans. The Americans are confident of tlicir ability to repel the next attack.—(A. and X.Z. Cable.)
