ZXaST AUCKLAND BOARD. EXEMPTION AND LEAVE. The First Auckland Military Service Board resumed sitting in Auckland to-day. Kicnard W. F. Donaldson, commercial traveller, B Class, Second Division, asked for time in order to complete his business affaire on. behalf of a firm in Sydney, of which place he was resident. , The goods he had to cell comprised those which -would only be saleable in the early summer. Hie firm would not have sent them if it had known he wee called in the ballot. He required four months' extension of leave. The Board granted leave till November 7. The adjourned appeal of Mrs McCarthy on behalf of John R. J. McCarthy was dealt with, and, on the strength of a medical certificate pr*eented, the Board recommended that ttie soldier 'be kept in camp until properly recovered. A soldier named Robert Appleby was given extended leave'until October 10 on account of his wife's ilMiealth. SINE DIE. Thos. R. McC. Haelett, of Karak*, eaid he was the only man on a 201-acre itarm, on -wflick lie was working for the last IS months. It carried heavy financial obligations. He was previously a plumber, bat had an interest in land, having been reared on a farm. Of 7J! acres now ploughed, he had done all toot 20 acres. Hie only brother was on active eerviee. The appeal was adjourned Bine die, on the usual conditions. George Boberte, orchardist, Henderson, reported that he had been unable to make arrangements {or the disposal ot hie elderly father's land and soldier brother's property adjoining since last before the Board in March. The reason ■was that there was at present no demand for that class of orchard land. He hart a brother at the front. The Boar* granted an adjournment of the appea: until November 15. ARMATURE WORKER EXEMPTED. Fred St. L. Sullivan (CI), armature winder, Devonport (Mr. Mowlem), appealed on the ground of occupation, ar he was carrying on an important bustneee, his original employer being on active service. Appellant represented a number of large electrical firms which entrusted him with work. The Tramway Company armature men dealt with special work, but appellant said ihe did all kinds of essential work, and, as far an he knew, wae the only man doing it in Auckland, outside the Tramway Company. Appellant had three brothers on service, one being killed, and two adopted brothers, both of whom had been wounded. Four of them left New Zealand to go pn service. Appellant, wfco had enlisted with the 9th Reinforcemejrte, was the only brother now at 'home wio had not served. The Board eaid it had evidence previously as to the essentiality of armature winders. Taking all the facts into consideration, the appeal was adjourned sine die. The adjourned appeal of Wm. Blake, milk vendor, Epsom (Mr. Moody), who was also supplying 274 residents ot Epsom and Mount Eden. Hβ brother ■had been killed on active service. Major Conlan elicited that five married brother* (one of whom had a milk round) had not yet eerved in the Expeditionary Forces. Appellant said the man he employed was not capable of carrying , on -the round. Appellant said he had been unable to cell the business. The board gave exemption until November'?. REHEARING REFUSED. The appeal of Chas. P. Lewis, previously dismissed and leave granted until July 4, re-appealed on the same ground as formerly, that (he was ah expert sheet-metal worker, panel-beater, and radiator, and the only man in the North Island able to do certain skilled work. He had a considerable amount of work in hand to finfeh, and appellant had no one to take his place.. Major Conlan said there were no fresh grounds. He could produce evidence to show that appellant had all along shown an attitude against military service. The hoard refused to rehear the case, as there were insufficient new grounds to warrant it.
